Chinese Film Noir: Black Coal, Thin Ice
Black Coal, Thin Ice (白日焰火) is a 2014 Chinese film noir written and directed by Diao Yinan (刁亦男), a brilliant Sixth Generation director. Revolving around a detective, played by Liao Fan (廖凡), who investigates a series of bizarre murders, the film is fascinating for its sophisticated plot, striking cinematography, scenes spiked with eros and tension, and dark humor. At the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, this film won the Golden Bear for Best Film and Liao Fan won the Silver Bear for Best Actor.
