Celebrating the American Composer – Randall Thompson

The New Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. John T. King, will present its final concert of the 2015-2016 season on Sunday, May 1 at 4 PM, in the sanctuary of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church located at 6 Greenacres Avenue, Scarsdale, NY. The program features music by one of America’s greatest 20th century composers, Randall Thompson.

The works by Thompson include “Alleluia,” a hauntingly beautiful a cappella piece that weaves the four voice parts in an ethereal and dramatic manner, with only one word of text – ‘Alleluia.’ The familiar poems of Robert Frost were set to music in the beloved “Frostiana” by Thompson and the chorus will perform the full set of seven songs. The dramatic end to the season’s music comes with “The Testament of Freedom” featuring writings of Thomas Jefferson in a four movement piece that centers on Jefferson’s letters and writings during the Revolutionary war as well as an excerpt from his letter in 1821 to John Adams. The inspiring words and powerful musical setting make this work filled with patriotism and emotion.
