Artists Conversations #2: First Time Female Authors

RiverArts presents a panel of local authors who discuss writing and publishing their first book. The books are diverse, including novels, memoirs, and nonfiction; the subject matter is varied and unpredictable. What unifies them is that all the books are the first publishing achievement of each author. The afternoon will be moderated by Christina Ha, one of the hosts of Channel 13’s NYC Arts program.

The authors and their books are:

Karen Engelmann [The Stockholm Octavo]
The Stockholm Octavo transports readers to a colorful Scandinavian world of intrigue and magic in a dazzling golden age of high art, music, and opulent fashion.

Veera Hiranandani [The Whole Story of Half a Girl]
Ms. Hiranandani’s middle grade novel tells the story of Sonia Nadhamuni, half Indian and half Jewish-American. After her father loses his job she finds herself yanked out of private school and thrown into the unfamiliar world of public education.

Jenny Rosenstrach [Dinner: A Love Story]
Dinner: A Love Story is a cookbook/memoir that covers all the things that can happen at the family dinner table during all stages of a family’s life.

Patty Chang Anker [Some Nerve: Lessons Learned While Becoming Brave]
Ms. Anker’s book is the story of how a self-professed chicken began facing her fears in midlife and inspiring others to do the same. It imparts both practical advice and profound wisdom for how ordinary people can cultivate courage in their everyday lives.

Marcie Cuff [This Book Was a Tree]
This Book Was a Tree will inspire you to touch, collect, document, sketch, decode, analyze, experiment, unravel, compare and reflect on the real world. It’s a funky hands-on book for today’s pioneer—that person looking to explore the natural world and decipher nature’s perplexing puzzles.
