Artist Conversation- Jazz Musicians Mark Morganelli, John Patitucci, Chuck Loeb, Tim Armacost, Ron Vincent

RiverArts, in association with the Masters School, has assembled a panel of five prominent Jazz Musicians to explore how Jazz music is created.

Bassist John Patitucci has been at the forefront of the jazz world for the last 30 years and active in all styles of music. He is a three-time Grammy award winner, has been nominated over fourteen times and has played on many other Grammy award-winning recordings. John has won many magazine polls and awards as a double bassist and bass guitarist. He has performed and/or recorded with jazz giants such as Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Victor Feldman, Nancy Wilson and countless others.

Producer, Director, and Trumpeter/flugelhornist Mark Morganelli began presenting concerts in his first Jazz Forum loft at 50 Cooper Square in June 1979. By the time the second Jazz Forum loft closed its doors in April 1983, recordings, videos, films and radio broadcasts had documented performances by Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, and Wynton Marsalis, among others.  Morganelli has produced over sixty compact discs, most for Candid Records, twenty of which were recorded “Live” at NYC’s Birdland club,. When he moved to Westchester, he  inaugurated the Jazz at the Music Hall series in Tarrytown. Performers have included Ahmad Jamal, Billy Taylor, Harry “Sweets” Edison, James Moody, Betty Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Herbie Mann, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Mangione, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Savion Glover, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and the Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, Duke Ellington and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestras.

After a life of travel and discovery on three continents, Tim Armacost has established himself as one of the most important saxophonists on the New York scene today. Armacost was born in Los Angeles, but came of age as a musician in Tokyo, New Delhi and Amsterdam, where he burnished his reputation as an upcoming talent, with a big tenor sound and an impeccable rhythmic sense. He tours regularly around the world both as a sideman and a leader. Armacost has worked with a phenomenal number of jazz greats, including Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Billy Hart, Victor Lewis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Peter Erskine, Ray Drummond, Roy Hargrove, Don Friedman and Randy Brecker. He has recorded 8 critically acclaimed records as a leader and has composed for Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He is a widely respected educator, teaching at the Jamey Aebersold and Stanford Summer Jazz Workshops, at Queens College in New York City and as a clinician at Universities throughout the U.S., Japan and Europe.  Armacost is a first time Grammy nominee this year for his work on Emilio Solla’s recording, “Second Half.”

Drummer Ron Vincent has become a veteran of the New York City jazz scene where he has been recorded on over 70 CDs. He was a member of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and the Re-Birth of the Cool Tentet from 1989 until Mr. Mulligan’s passing in 1996. He recorded four CDs with Mr. Mulligan and has also recorded with Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Randy Brecker, Bob Brookmeyer, and Bill Charlap among others.  As a leader, his own trio and quartet are active in the New York City area and his quartet has toured the U.S. and Europe.
