“Art Speaks” with Jill Kiefer

Art Speaks

Join OAC Member Jill Kiefer in a new Sunday Series we’re calling “Art Speaks”

When:

January 17, 2016 ~ 2 – 3:30 PM – What About Art? – American Style – This presentation will feature one or two works from local artists participating in this program—among many other artworks—as we look at some of the features that are characteristic of American art. Emphasis will be placed on the love of the natural environment—which is deeply embedded in the American DNA—and the ways in which the ingenuity and inventiveness that distinguish us feed into the American artistic tradition. Special attention will be paid to the art of June Farnham, who will say a few words about her work and bring along a couple of original pieces of her art.

February 14, 2016~ 2 – 3:30 PM –Making Art Out of “Stuff” – This program will focus on Assemblage, Collage, Alternative Media, and other types of art that make use of found objects, and non-art materials. How (and why) does one turn a toilet into a work of art? How does a piece of garbage become a masterwork? How does “stuff” inspire artists? We’ll be looking at a variety of works in this program to illustrate how much of what is ‘art’ relies on the vision and creativity of the artist.

February 28, 2016~ 2 – 3:30 PM – Who Are the Heroes? – The great masters and masterworks of art are the teachers—the colleagues—and the friends of all of us who create art. When we go to a museum or gallery and look at works that inspire us, we feel at home, because we’re truly with family. This program will take a look at who inspired some of the most famous artists of all time—and why—as well as those artists who inspire us

March 6, 2016~ 2 – 3:30 PM – >Space and Place as the Artist’s Muses! – Artists have always been inspired by the places and spaces where they live, love, learn, and create. This program will look at some primary examples of how this has been expressed in art, over time. Special emphasis will be placed on regional traditions—and particularly on local artists.

April 3, 2016~ 2 – 3:30 PM – What Is “Abstract Art” Really? – Very few people truly understand what the term “abstract art” actually means—even among art professionals. It’s not the same as “non-representational art”. This program will focus on both abstract and non-representational approaches, with the goal of enlightening attendees on both approaches. We’ll also have a look at just how far back abstraction and non-representation go—in the history of art!
