An Evening of Dance Films

Join Steffi Nossen Dance Foundation Artistic Director Jessica DiMauro Marks as she leads the Zoom audience through five short dance works inspired by the current pandemic and racial justice movements on and for film. Each work will include a discussion about the work with its creator led by Ms. DiMauro Marks. The evening will include the premiere of Ms. Marks’ new “Behind the Silence choreographed this fall on the Steffi Nyssen Dance Company. It revisits a prior work created for stage; the new work explores, through phrase work and natural landscapes, such  questions as:  What gives a woman power? What threatens her livelihood? What makes her connect her woman power?

Stefanie Batten Bland will show a new work recently premiered by Works & Process at the Guggenheim.  Other COVID commissions include: virtual global performance EU Day for the European Union at the United Nations, distanced films for Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, ABT at Duke, and participated in panel discussions including Dance Data Project, Black Stories, and Corps de Ballet USA.

“Brothers and Sons” choreographed by Gierre Godley is a collaboration created in response to conversations concerning the current climate of racial justice protest and unrest. It will be presented by his all-male dance company, Project 44 in association with Queensborough Community College and CUNY Dance Initiative.

Lastly “Central Park Field #4″, choreographed during the Global Pandemic, practicing 6-foot distance between dancers at all times, to the driving music of Philip Glass. She explains, “The state set up fi field hospitals in Central Park, helping people who had COVID-19. Across the lawn, I saw a ‘Field of Dreams’, empty safe space .As  dance heals the human spirit, and in these times, the Arts are more necessary than ever;  the driving music of Philip Glass together with the architecture of the diamond itself, inspired me to choreograph this work.”

Kathleen Kelley and Christian von Howard, in a collaboration between Proto Media + Performance and VON HOWARD PROJECT created “State of Grace” In this work the desire to move together transcends the limitations of social distancing as two dancers find each other and uplift each other for a moment in time.  Music is by Michael Wall.

We hope you will enjoy these new works; some are excerpts of longer pieces and links to the longer originals will be included.

The event will also include the opportunity to enter drawing featuring 3 exciting experiences to enjoy. Your Zoom link will be sent; admission is by suggested donation with a $15 minimum.
