African-American Heritage Month Performance: “How Sweet the Sound”
In an interactive program created and performed by Julia Breanetta Simpson with full musical
accompaniment, the evolution of American music is traced through more than three centuries:
from the time of Slavery to the “Jazz Age”. The show encompasses dance and highlights the
music of such notable American Composers as Scott Joplin, J. Rosamond Johnson, and Billie
Holiday. With spirituals and gospel hymns such as “Go Down Moses” and This Little Light of
Mine”, this musical history is as exciting and entertaining as it is educational. “How Sweet The
Sound” is suitable for audiences of all ages. Made possible by the New Rochelle Downtown
Business Improvement District (BID) and the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.
Ossie Davis Theater. Free.
