Afaa Weaver Reading

A native of Baltimore, Afaa Weaver was born to southern working class people in 1951, and after two years at the University of Maryland, he left in 1970 to work in factories for fifteen years (1970-85) as his literary apprenticeship. He emerged from that period with Water Song, his first book of poetry, and an NEA in poetry. He completed the graduate writing program at Brown (1985-87) and began teaching. A playwright as well, Afaa has received the PDI Award in playwriting, and in poetry the 2014 Kingsley Tufts Award for The Government of Nature and four Pushcart prizes.
