ADULT CLASSES
WHERE TO START
Learn the basics while discovering the transformational qualities of clay. Students interested in trying clay for the first time will be introduced to wheel throwing, hand building, or a combination of the two in a one-time or six-week session.

WHEEL-THROWING 101 Wheel

Learn the basics of how to use the potter’s wheel as a tool to make functional pots. Students will learn basic wheel throwing techniques; from throwing and trimming, to glazing finished pieces. No previous clay experience needed. We will use cone 6 glazes.

THE NEXT STEP
Students who have taken introductory level ceramics classes will try new things while developing technique, skill and a deeper understanding of the medium. Students receive weekly demonstrations and one-on-one instruction.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL CLASSES
Students who have taken previous ceramics classes will try new things while developing personal vision. Students receive weekly demonstration of new techniques, one on one instruction and discussion of individual projects
CONE 6 WITH KEIKO Combination

Explore the cone 6 glaze palette. Keiko will demonstrate various glazing and decorating techniques using Eastern traditions as a starting point. Work in individual directions; both hand builders and wheel throwers are welcome. Taught in English and Japanese.

Hone skills and techniques for the potter. Focus on the development of balanced pots that work both technically and visually. Build upon the foundation skills of wheel throwing to form cohesive pots with handles, feet, lids, rims and spouts. Explore alteration techniques and discuss strategies to unlock the mysteries of successful glazing.

Beginning with a specific use in mind, create vessels for the table and home using wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Explore their utility from form to glaze.

DESIGN WITH A CRITICAL EYE Design

Learn the basics of design with quick prototyping, sketching, and model-making exercises. This class will go over how simple models can impact long-term projects both sculptural and functional. Every session will have group discussions and critiques to develop visual vocabulary and assessment skills. This course will feature both cone 6 clay and non-clay methods of making.

BUILDING BIG Hand Building

Go big or go home! Ever had a vision of making larger-than-life objects? Now’s your chance! See what it takes to create large pieces using a variety of handbuilding techniques. Firing fees will be determined on group class firings. This class is limited to 9 people.

ADVANCED CLASSES
Students who have taken previous ceramics classes and honed their skills will think critically, enhance technical skills and expand knowledge and understanding of history and ceramics processes.
FOCUSING ON YOUR OWN CLAY VISION Combination

Continue to explore and enrich your clay vision. Develop an integrated body of work while improving technical skills. Each class will have demonstrations, dialogue and time to fine tune technical skills and surface explorations.

Pursue your passions and learn new techniques through a Japanese approach. Express your personal creative vision using a diverse range of wheel throwing techniques. Create a variety of forms working at your own pace. Taught in Japanese and English.

Everything old is new again. With ancient pots as inspiration and reference for design and decoration, continue to hone your skills and integrate what speaks to you from the past. In this class, work on technical throwing and construction skills.

FINDING YOUR VOICE Wheel

This class will focus on helping students develop an eye for what makes a good pot and integrating it in their practice. Continue to fine tune your wheel throwing skills and learn new surface/glaze strategies by working on special projects that are both individual and group focused. There will be class discussions, lively interaction, and special attention to help all students grow to find their voice.

Students will continue to explore more involved wheel throwing, hand building and glazing techniques while thinking critically in the development of a body of work, advancing technical skills and expanding knowledge of the endless possibilities found in the ceramic process.

MULTI PART VESSELS Combination

Troubleshoot all of the difficulties of multi-part vessels: lids, spouts, handles, etc. Using handbuilding and/or wheel throwing methods, learn how to join everything together for flawless seams, corners, and fittings for that perfect pot.

ALL LEVELS
From Beginners to Advanced, students develop technically and conceptually through various focused techniques and topics.
SCULPTURE STUDIES Hand Building

Hand builders, unite! In this class you will develop technical and conceptual skills through various hand building projects. This course is designed to provide individual instruction and support through demonstration of fundamental hand building techniques. Whether organic or architectural, figurative or abstract; learn the terminology of sculpture. We will use cone 6 glazes.

HANDMADE TILES

11 Weeks: September 12 – December 12 (no class 9/26, 10/24, 11/28)
Learn how to create custom tiles and mosaics with personalized tips and techniques from the starting design to final glaze application. This class will use cone 6 glazes and includes a lab fee.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
$150/month
Open studio for independent study will be available in our Independent Study/Outreach classroom on a monthly basis. This is a time when intermediate and advanced students can have access to the classroom to work without instruction. Students must have taken classes at CAC for at least one year to be eligible and must be willing to sign a detailed agreement. Students will have access to the classroom during specific hours seven days a week (up to 40 hours a week) and will have access to both the high fire and low fire glaze rooms. To sign up for independent study, please come to the office or call during office hours.
Independent Study students must be a CAC Member.

FAMILIES & FRIENDS
One-time class for adults, children and families interested in experimenting with clay for the first time
SATURDAY DROP-IN CLAY CLASS AGES 5 – 99

$5 firing fee (per piece)

Plan a great afternoon with friends, family, or just yourself while exploring your inner artist in this fun and messy introduction to clay! Professional ceramic artists guide themed weekly projects. Projects take between 1.5- 2 hours. Want to keep your masterpiece? Projects can be glazed and fired. This class includes materials. Children under 12 must attend with a guardian.
SPACE IS LIMITED. Tickets go on sale at the front desk 30 minutes prior to each session. First Come First Served.
