A River Runs Through
features a group of artists forged by respective ties to Kansas City. The exhibition stands in reference to the geographic feature that distinguishes the city and its changes. This changing body of water reflects the Kansas City community. A River Runs Through captures a view of the many forces that pull and push the local art scene. Through photography, collage, painting and drawing, the show explores forces both internal and external, abstract and physical, that change the nature of the Kansas City ecosystem.

Like Kansas City, small towns and large cities across the country morph to meet shifting concepts of what a community is. In the process, the people who belong to these areas also shift in and out of place. With them they carry personal markers, both material and immaterial, of where they have lived, with whom, and how. In this transient state, how does a community define itself and continue to operate with a culture?

The show looks to reconcile some of these trends by bringing together individuals who have made a mark in the KC ecosystem, acknowledging their presence outside of the city, and therefore supporting continued connections with those inside Kansas City.

Curated by Kansas City based artist-curators, Madeline Brice, Samantha Haan, and Cesar Lopez.
