The Man: Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta, India into a wealthy Brahmin family. He was a Renaissance man, a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet, philosopher and educator. His words evoked great beauty, drawing in the heart and feeding the soul. He gave the world a glimpse of the mysticism and sentimental beauty of Indian culture that left the West hungry for more. He was the first nonwesterner to receive the Nobel Prize for literature and King George V knighted him.
