9th Annual Writers on War & Peace Reading


Join the Hudson Valley Writers Center and Slapering Hol Press for our 9th Annual Writers on War & Peace Reading.

The evening will feature readings from prose writers, Matt Gallagher and Andrew Slater, veterans and contributors to Fire & Forget: Short Stories from the Long War (Da Capo Press, 2013).

Six local poets will also read, as chosen by an editor of Slapering Hol Press. Please submit all poetry by October 31st.

Matt Gallagher is the author of the Iraq war memoir Kaboom and coeditor of, and contributor to, the short fiction collection Fire & Forget: Short Stories from the Long War. A former Army cavalry officer, he holds an MFA from Columbia and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, and The Atlantic, among other places. His novel Young Blood is forthcoming from Atria/Simon & Schuster and he lives in Brooklyn with his wife Annie and their golden retriever Ernie.

Andrew Slater is a combat veteran of the United States military, having served from 2000 – 2010 as an Infantry and Special Forces Officer touring in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2012 he received an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University. From 2012 – 2014 he taught english literature at the American University of Iraq in Sulaimani, Kurdistan. His writing as appeared in Blunderbuss Magazine, Epiphany: A Literary Journal, the anthology Fire And Forget by Da Capo Press, The Daily Beast, The New York Times, NPR’s Here And Now, and he most recently reported on the conflict in Iraq/Kurdistan for The Daily Beast. Andrew is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University.
