LOBBY

Burtz is known primarily for her oil paintings, life-size, of women of exotic, arresting beauty. They do not confront; they entice. The viewer is drawn in, wondering: what they are thinking, what they are feeling? The explanation goes beyond figuration, to the masterful handling of composition, color, light, volume and space.

Tracy aims to “forget” her training and simply to “create” without the constant barriers of her formal education. As a result, her work is simplified, yet at the same time specific, about paint usage, color and abstraction.
During her forty year career the subject of her work always returns to the emotional life of women. Some miseries must be endured alone. Some wonderment can only be experienced alone. A joy shared can be greater; a puzzlement or a misery shared is also greater. For many women, the embodiment of true constancy is the dog, who sits and watches and loves.

Ms Burtz lives and has her studio in Pleasantville, NY, a suburb in Westchester County. She received her BFA from Boston University School for the Arts and her MFA from CUNY Queens College. She has exhibited in New York City, Taos NM, Nantucket MA, Southhampton NY, Greenwich CT, and Paris France, among other places, and has twelve one-woman shows. Her work has been featured on the Netflix film “Private Lives” and the NBC show SMASH and is included in the permanent collection of New York University.
