6-week Intro to Calligraphy workshop

Calligraphy is a delicate and elegant yet endangered craft. This 6-week course is an introduction to the art form’s true meaning: calli- kalos in Greek, meaning “fine,” and -graphy from the Greek grapho meaning “write.” Following an old-school philosophy, and beginning with the fundamental methods and principles of implements and materials, students will be taught key calligraphy terms, structural guidelines, scale, angles, direction and basic pen strokes. Starting with the dual-pencil technique, the class will progress to the broad-edged nib while learning the Foundational Hand developed by Edward Johnston in the early 20th century (based on the 15th century Humanist script), which is the essential starting point for learning other hands such as Italic, Uncial, Rustic and Blackletter. No prior experience or skills are necessary. The only prerequisites are enthusiasm and the willingness to learn the skills needed to create beautiful letters. All supplies are provided.
