Concordia Conservatory More Than Music Concert

“BIRDSONG” PRESENTED ON APRIL 24 AT 4PM  AS PART OF 

THE CONCORDIA CONSERVATORY’S MORE THAN MUSIC CONCERTS


Bronxville, NY – Concordia Conservatory presents the More Than Music concert on Sunday, April 24 at 4:00  pm.  The program, entitled Birdsong will be performed by Concordia Conservatory faculty Monica Bauchwitz and Emanouil Manolov, violin, Chungsun Kim, cello, and Marija Ilić, piano, and features music by Dvorak, Rameau, Biber, Mozart, Casals, and Fanny Dillon. The concert will take place at the home of Laurie and Hoke Slaughter, 2 Elm Rock Road, Bronxville.

Birdsong has been an inspiration for composers throughout the centuries. This concert/lecture is a celebration of birds, nature, and life exploring our global climate crisis and how to protect the planet and natural life – through chamber music.

About the Concordia Conservatory Faculty Artists

Hailed as an “excellent violinist” by the Washington Post, Monica Bauchwitz performs extensively in chamber music, orchestral and solo settings. Ms. Bauchwitz has studied and worked both in the United States and Europe. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the Conservatoire de Geneve, she has held positions with L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Esbjerg Ensemble-the national Danish chamber ensemble. She has toured widely across Europe with classical and contemporary chamber music repertoire and has participated in such festivals as Great Irish Houses Music Festival in Ireland and the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber Music Series in Germany. She has performed as soloist with orchestras in Scandinavia, Central Europe, and the New York region and has recorded chamber music under the Philips label. As a former member of the critically acclaimed Contrasts Quartet, she has received the Chamber Music America Residency grant. 

Ms. Bauchwitz is the founder of the Manhattan chamber music series “Concerts in the Heights.” She is co-concertmaster and Artistic Director of the String Orchestra of New York City- SONYC. Ms. Bauchwitz serves on the faculty of Concordia Conservatory and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Violinist Emanouil Manolov made his debut performing on Bulgarian National Television

at the age of 10. Since then, he has concertized throughout Europe, the

United States and Japan. He can be seen regularly on the stage of Carnegie Hall, as

well as performing with the Greenwich, Norwalk and New Haven Symphonies.

Mr. Manolov appears in chamber music performances with members of the Emerson

Quartet and the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center.An active teacher, Mr. Manolov has in Greenwich, CT, and is also on the faculty of Concordia Conservatory in Bronxville, NY and Stamford, CT. He is a teaching artist with the Norwalk Youth Symphony and is a frequent adjudicator for young artists’ competitions in the New York area. He has served on the faculty of the PointCounterpoint Festival in Vermont and is currently on the faculty of the Blue

Mountain Music Festival in Lancaster, PA.

Cellist Chungsun Kim has been widely recognized for performances in major music capitals in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Her expressive playing and extraordinary musicianship has led her to perform many different concerts at venues in the United States and abroad, including Alice Tully Hall, Sejong Concert Recital Hall (Korea), Araki Concert Hall (Japan), Chiesa Santo Spirito (Italy), Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall (David Geffen Hall) at Lincoln Center. She has appeared as a soloist with Pro-Arte Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Sarah Lawrence Symphony Orchestra, National Repertoire Orchestra, Philharmonia Lawrencia, New York Virtuosi, Ars Ensemble, and Aspen Summer Music Festival Orchestra. She has also been featured as a guest artist at music festivals such as Arcady Music Festival, InterHarmony International Music Festival (Italy), New International Music Festival (Korea), Laurentian Summer Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Germany), Beethoven Festival, Summit Music Festival, and The Academy of Music Festival. She was featured at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center as part of the Nyack College School of Music celebration. 

As an active chamber musician, Ms. Kim was a founding member of Amasi Trio, the Trio in Residence of Nyack College School of Music. She was also a member of Trio di Buson, the Orion Music Ensemble and the Balcony Chamber Music Series in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.  As an orchestra player, she has played with Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Westchester Philharmonic, the New York Virtuosi, the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, and a soloist and principal of the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra.



Ms. Kim is also a dedicated teacher and cello pedagogue. She is a current faculty member at Nyack College, Concordia Conservatory, and the Hotchkiss School. She has been teaching at InterHarmony International Music Festival in Acqui Terme, Piedmont, Italy.

 Ms. Kim received her Bachelors, Masters, and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Leonard Rose, Channing Robbins, and Harvey Shapiro.

Pianist Marija Ilić is a dedicated and expressive performer of the standard repertoire, as well as the newest music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her performances include recitals at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Clark Studio Theater at Lincoln Center, 92nd Street Y and Merkin Hall, Trinity Church, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., as well as at the Music Festival of the Hamptons, Norfolk Contemporary Music Festival, Hoch Chamber Music Series at Concordia College, Skinner Hall at Vassar College, Western Washington, Princeton, and Loyola Universities, and abroad at the Aldeburgh Festival in England and Musica Viva, Kolarac Hall, and Parliament Hall in Belgrade (Serbia), Constanta (Romania), and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), among others. She has worked closely with some of today’s most important composers, including William Bolcom, Martin Bresnick, George Crumb, Oliver Knussen, Joan Tower, Meredith Monk, and Aleksandra Vrebalov. She performs as a piano duo with Milica Jelača Jovanović and is the founding principal pianist of Christopher Caines Dance Company, and is a member of Dan Joseph Ensemble. 

A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Marija holds her undergraduate degree from the Belgrade Music Academy, her graduate degree from the Mannes College of Music, and a doctorate in piano performance from Rutgers University. Her piano teachers include Susan Starr, Pavlina Dokovska, Nina Svetlanova, Stephanie Brown, and harpsichord with Kenneth Cooper. She can be heard on New World Records, Mutable Music, Innova and Silent Treatment Music labels, and her solo piano CD on MSR Music label, with music by J. S. Bach. She is on the faculty at Vassar College and Concordia Conservatory, where she is the artistic director for the More Than Music concert series.
