The Pelham Art Center is pleased to host an evening of intimate conversation and a visual presentation with Cey Adams. Cey was the Creative Director of Def Jam Recordings, where he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s in-house visual design firm, where he created visual identities, album covers, logos, and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., and more.
Cey’s recent body of work explores our fascination and hypnotic relationship with brand loyalty. The images, characters and mascots in his pieces are used as a metaphor to analyze larger questions about the “celebration” of American culture, a bygone era in history, closely related to youth.
Cey has created murals all over the country for public and private clients. Most notably One Nation, a mural sized collage and mixed media black American Flag, commissioned to commemorate the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, reflecting the common thread of American values.
His fine art draws inspiration from 60’s pop art, sign painting, comic books, and popular culture. His work focuses on themes including race and gender relations, cultural and community issues. His crossovers with commercial projects such as fashion brands, musicians, and Google are seamless in his use of visual vocabulary.
Cey emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit with fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat & Keith Haring. He appeared in the historic 1982 PBS documentary Style Wars which tracks subway graffiti in NewYork. He exhibits, lectures and teaches art workshops at institutions including: MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of the City of New York, New York University, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Walker Art Center, MoCA Los Angeles, and more. His professional experience as a designer and visual artist has led him to many collaborations with international brands. Join us on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 6-8pm for a visual lecture and discussion with Cey Adams, Art & Design Crossovers, at the Pelham Art Center, 155 Fifth Ave, Pelham, NY.
Cey’s catalog will be available for $20. The evening will end with a catalog signing opportunity.
This event is FREE and all are welcome.
