CALL FOR ENTRIES:
JUNETEENTH – A NARRATIVE OF FREEDOM
June 1 – June 30, 2021 at the NRCA Rotunda Gallery
The NRCA Rotunda Gallery Committee invites artists in the tri-state area, working in all mediums, to submit up to three (3) entries of work completed between 2018 and 2021, for the exhibit Juneteenth – A Narrative of Freedom. A limited number of small free-standing works will be eligible for acceptance to be exhibited in glass cabinets at the Rotunda Gallery. Sculpture will be accepted for the virtual exhibition. All work submitted must be available throughout the exhibition dates; substitutions will not be allowed.
The Juneteenth exhibit is part of a city-wide celebration – Juneteenth – Passion and Perseverance organized by The Lincoln Park Conservancy, Inc. with support from the City of New Rochelle. The exhibition commemorates Juneteenth, the African American holiday that marks the end of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. The date’s importance derives from the fact that slavery had been abolished in the United States since 1863 with the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863, but Confederate states, like Texas, refused to acknowledge the law of the land. Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day and Liberation Day was first celebrated in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1866, one year after the enslaved were liberated. Festivities were family-centered affairs that included cookouts, family reunions, historical plays, musical performances and exhibitions.
Juneteenth- A Narrative of Freedom celebrates freedom delayed in a divided country – the North and the South – similar to the fracture we are currently experiencing. The theme is not solely about injustice, but also about looking forward to a future of possibilities.
This is both an in-person and virtual exhibit, and entries are photographic and must be submitted as jpegs. The quality of the photographs must be absolutely clear. Photographic images that do not meet the guidelines will not be considered.

Juneteenth – A Narrative of Freedom will also be a virtual exhibit on the NRCA YouTube Channel. By submitting your images to the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, you certify that the images are your own work, that you own all rights and that you take full responsibility for the content of all images, including the likenesses of recognizable individuals. The actual artwork will remain the property of the artist, but the artist will grant copyright to the New Rochelle Council on the Arts for inclusion in the virtual exhibit and for display, marketing and promotional use.
