ArtsWestchester Healing Arts Exhibition, “On the Horizon,” Opens at Memorial Sloan Kettering Westchester

On view through April 2018

As the leaves change, so does the artwork in two prominent waiting areas at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Westchester. On the Horizon, is ArtsWestchester’s third exhibition in collaboration with the center, on view through April 2018. The exhibition features five artists from New York and Connecticut and changes every six months.

Cheryl Vlachos, an artist and resident of Cortlandt Manor, NY, has two paintings in the exhibition on the Lower Concourse of the facility. A recent patient at the center, Vlachos shared that the art at MSK was particularly impactful for her during her visit.

“It’s a privilege to be part of the ArtsWestchester and Memorial Sloan Kettering exhibition in West Harrison. It is even more poignant for me this year to have been part of the show because I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Vlachos said. ”I started my first treatments at MSK, in October and had a lot of anxiety, but while sitting in the waiting room with my husband Bob, I focused on the beautiful artwork on the walls and it definitely helped me cope with the situation, and along with the MSK staff’s kindness, I forged through. To express oneself through the arts is important to the health and well-being of the soul.”

In this way, Vlachos becomes the healer and the healed. Her panoramic paintings are juxtaposed with a similarly autumnal pair of works by HM Saffer (Craryville, NY). On the Horizon continues throughout the upper waiting room with works by Christa Forrest (Stamford, CT), Jill Parry (Mamaroneck, NY), and Michael Torlen (Purchase, NY). Displaying familiar landscapes in a variety of settings, this exhibition reminds viewers that the best days are closer than they think.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Westchester is located at 500 Westchester Avenue in West Harrison. For more information about ArtsWestchester, visit www.artswestchester.org.
