Dividing the Estate is set in a Texas town in 1987. With satiric humor, it focuses on a clan of malcontents ruled by the matriarch, Stella. The family must prepare for an uncertain future when plunging real estate values and an unexpected tax bill have a negative impact on the family fortune. Stella’s adult children – predatory Mary Jo, complacent Lucille, and alcoholic Lewis – engage in a debate about whether or not they should divide the estate while their mother is still alive in order to ensure themselves financial independence.
The play will be staged by experienced director and actor Elaine Hartel. She has directed many plays for YCPTW including All in the Timing, The Foreigner, Over the River and Through the Woods, and Witness for the Prosecution. She has also directed for the Hand to Mouth Players in Montrose, the Heritage Hills Theater in Somers and the Westchester Collaborative Theater in Ossining. She has performed major roles throughout Westchester in both comedy and drama over the last 40 years. She has a Master’s Degree in Communication Arts, Western Ct. State Univ., and a BA Degree, Tulane Univ., New Orleans (her home town).
