Westchester Oratorio Society begins preparations for the group’s 2014-2015 Season – its 18th, and the eighth under the direction of Benjamin Niemczyk, with rehearsals starting on Tuesday evening, September 9 in Katonah, NY.
On Saturday evening, November 22, WOS will perform Bach’sChristmas Oratorio and selected other works at the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco featuring the acclaimed organist, James Kennerley on the church’s magnificent Von-Beckerath organ.
The Society’s spring season features the great choral masterwork, Mozart’s Mass in C minor performed with WOS’s esteemed professional orchestra and professional soloists on Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2015.
Other, more informal singing opportunities are also offered during the season through WOS’s Chamber Chorus, which returns to historicMuscoot Farm for the holiday celebrations, and other local venues old and new.
Competent singers in all voice parts with an ability to read music are welcome to join. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:15 PM at the beautifully renovated, well-lit, and climate-controlled Garden Room at the Katonah Library, which features a 1912 Steinway D piano and is just a short walk from the Metro North station.
Prospective members are invited to join the group for an Open House Rehearsal on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 PM, to try out the venue, meet the membership, and learn more about singing with the Society.
Founded in 1997, Westchester Oratorio Society is known for its performances of early music, traditional choral masterworks and contemporary pieces before local audiences with professional soloists and orchestras, and collaborations with premier groups and artists such as Tiffany Consort and REBEL Baroque Ensemble, as well as its appearances in the New York metropolitan area including with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
The society is dedicated to providing a community and educational experience for amateur singers of all levels while bringing exceptional performances with professional orchestras and soloists to local audiences. This past spring’s concert featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria with REBEL Baroque received an Arts Alive Grant through ArtsWestchester and was selected by WQXR for a Media Partnership.
