This year, Castle Gallery’s Westchester Biennial will celebrate its ninth juried art exhibition. The exhibit, which showcases recent work by emerging and established Westchester County artists, began in 1998 in an attempt to recognize the diversity and innovation of artists who call Westchester their home; being the only show of its kind open exclusively to Westchester County artists, makes this show unique. The work submitted must have been created within the last two years (2012-2013). Featured artworks will be selected by notable jurors from outside of the county to encourage fairness in judging.
Deadline for Submissions is Monday, February 3, 2014 (postmarked)
Open Call for Entries:
All Westchester artists at any stage in their professional careers are encouraged to submit CD-roms or videos of work completed in the 2012 and 2013 calendar years. Works in the following categories will be accepted for review – painting, sculpture, mixed-media, works on paper, photography, installation and video art. The final selection of work to be exhibited in The Westchester Biennial 2014 will be chosen by a panel of jurors.
Opening Reception: Sunday, May 4, 2014, 2-4 p.m.
You must be 21 years of age or older.
You must reside or have a studio in Westchester County.
Students, members of the Castle Gallery Board of Directors, and faculty and staff of The College of New Rochelle are not eligible.
Application form, completed and signed, along with four additional copies.
$25 submission fee – a check or money order made out to Castle Gallery.
No slides! No VHS tapes! A maximum of 10 digital images (300 dpi jpgs, no more than 6 inches in either direction – no powerpoint, or other grouped formats) or a maximum of 15 minutes on a DVD of work completed in 2012 and 2013 calendar years.
Four copies of a typed image identification sheet or video identification sheet.
Four copies of a typed, double-spaced artist’s intent or statement relevant to the submitted work (one-page maximum).
Four copies of a one-page resume listing professional achievements and educational background.
A self-addressed, stamped envelope with adequate postage for the return of submission materials. Submissions by accepted artists will be kept on file. Submissions by artists not accepted and without proper SASE will be discarded by Friday, March 7, 2014.
Selected artists will be contacted by Friday, February 28, 2014 by email. Castle Gallery will provide announcement cards to artists by late March. If artwork is under consignment at a gallery or with an art dealer, Castle Gallery will make loan arrangements for the exhibition. Artworks accepted will need to be dropped off, or shipped and delivered the week of March 31. Drop offs and deliveries are only accepted Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Castle Gallery will provide wall-to-wall insurance for artwork once it has arrived at The College of New Rochelle. There is a 25% commission on all artwork sold by Castle Gallery.
The jurors are Lisa Cooper, Owner of Elisa Contemporary Art Gallery in Riverdale, New York; Shari Medelson, a sculptor who resides in Brooklyn and upstate New York; and Nick De Pirro, president of Proto Gallery in Hoboken, New Jersey.
REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS
All work intended to be hung on the walls must be framed (if applicable), and securely wired. Inappropriately presented work will not be accepted. Installers will take special care in handling all submissions, but neither The College of New Rochelle nor the Castle Gallery staff will be responsible for damage due to poor construction, framing, wiring, or other problems inherent in the work. Artists are responsible for providing adequate protection or instructions for fragile work or any artwork that requires special handling.
