“Ways of Looking at, and Thinking about, the Landscape” – Eve Aschheim and John Yau

June 29- July 4

What are the languages of landscape, from Claude Monet and Georges Seurat to Agnes Martin, Brice Marden, Stanley Lewis, Lois Dodd, Gerhardt Richter and Robert Smithson? We will look at ways of looking at the landscape, as well as explore ways to render it – whatever it is – into another material. Students will work in the morning with the artist Eve Aschheim. In the evening, they will meet with the poet and critic John Yau. There will be some assigned readings as well as Power Point presentations in the evening sessions. The purpose of the course is to consider the subject of landscape in ways that are challenging and inspiring, to help you shake free from your own habits.
