Summer Teaching Opportunities at Purchase College, SUNY

There are two open positions in the Visual Arts Institute in the Summer 2014 Youth and Precollege Programs in the Arts at Purchase College, SUNY. The Visual Arts Institute is a four week (July 14-August 8) precollege (grades 10-12) program held in the Visual Arts Building.

I am seeking a full time Drawing and Painting and a full-time Sculpture instructor for this program which is in its 22nd year at Purchase.

The Drawing and Painting instructor is responsible for teaching a master workshop in Observation Drawing and Painting in the mornings and a Figure Drawing elective in the afternoon. They are described as follows:

Observational Drawing and Painting: Using pen and ink, charcoal, watercolor, and acrylic paint, investigate a variety of formal concerns—including the clothed figure, still life, and landscape.

Figure Drawing: Examine the human figure, analyzing the figure’s form and structure through the use of a variety of media, including charcoal, ink, conté crayon, and color. Male and female nude models are used for this workshop.

The Sculpture instructor is responsible for teaching a master workshop in Sculpture in the mornings and a Ceramics elective in the afternoon. They are described as follows:

Sculpture: Explore the process of creating art in three dimensions using wood, plastic, metal, clay/ceramics, and found materials. You will use basic woodworking power tools and will create a mold and cast multiples.

Ceramics: Focuses on clay as a sculptural medium with emphasis on process and the development of sculptural ideas. Various techniques are taught, including slab building, modeling, and some mold making for clay. (Description is subject to change)

The program runs M-F from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., although I ask that instructors work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The salary is $3,000 for the four week period. One of these instructors will also have the opportunity to take on Lead Instructor responsibilities (overseeing program curriculum, TA supervision, etc.) which would add a $665 honorarium to the salary. Please email me if you are interested in this position and we can discuss it in more detail.
